organic beauty with a history
PEARLS
Pearls are different. They are not created from rock, but from life - slowly, layer by layer, inside a shell. Each pearl is unique, shaped by time, patience and natural processes. No grinding, no polishing - their shine is from within. And this is precisely why pearls have exerted a special fascination for centuries. At RABBIT IN THE HAT, we value pearls not for their perfection, but for their peculiarities. For their irregular surface, their depth, their warm, soft shimmer. Pearls are quiet - but never inconspicuous.

How are pearls created?
Pearls are formed in mussels or oysters when a small foreign body gets inside the animal. As a natural defence reaction, this core is coated with many fine layers of mother-of-pearl. Over months or years, this creates a round or irregular shape - without any mechanical processing. This organic origin makes pearls unique in the field of fine jewellery materials.

Colour, shine and shape - what makes pearls special
Pearls do not show colours in the classic sense, but shimmer - iridescent light reflections that change with the angle of view. Their colour scale ranges from white, champagne, rosé and silver to dark grey, bronze or deep blue. In addition to their colour, it is above all the surface that is decisive: small irregularities, growth rings or layers make up the character of a pearl - and are not a flaw, but an expression of authenticity.

What we love about pearls
Pearls are not supporting actors - they are deliberately staged by us. In every design, we think carefully about where and how a pearl may appear: as a quiet focal point, as an organic contrast to clear edges or as a poetic accent in a structured composition.
Their natural imperfection, depth and inner radiance make them ideal partners for shapes with attitude. In combination with gold, they unfold their full effect - quietly but decisively. -
Care & special features
As an organic material, pearls are more sensitive than gemstones. They should be protected from perfume, acid or excessive sunlight. They are best worn - skin moisture keeps them supple and radiant. Pearls do not age like stones, but mature - their patina becomes more personal over the years.
Types of Beads That We Use
At RABBIT IN THE HAT, we work with selected freshwater and saltwater pearls - each with its own aesthetics, structure and history. We are not interested in the flawless ideal, but in the charisma of each piece.
- Freshwater pearls are created in river or lake mussels. They come in a wide variety of shapes - from round to oval to baroque - and often have a delicate, warm sheen in white, rosé or champagne tones.
- Saltwater pearls grow in sea oysters. They are rarer, usually rounder and have a particularly intense lustre. They include Akoya, Tahitian and South Sea pearls - each with its own character and colour spectrum.
- Baroque pearls - irregular, organic, almost sculptural
- Keshi pearls - seedless, light, with an intense surface
- Biwa pearls - elongated, flat, sometimes almost transparent
Each pearl tells its own story - and is not concealed, but deliberately staged.
What pearls mean at RABBIT IN THE HAT
A pearl stands for time, for gentleness, for a quiet form of luxury. It is not loud, not technical, not calculable. In a world of artificial smoothness, it remains natural - and reminds us that true beauty often lies in irregularity.
